Sula Paint & Peel Nail Color Review

Ello' there!

I hope all of you had a lovely weekend, and I hope that your sunday is going great! Sadly, after doing this review I'll be spending the rest of the day doing school work.

Anywho, I was recently given the chance to review a really unique product called Sula Paint & Peel nail color. That's right, a peel off nail polish! I saw this product at Ulta a few years back, I have no idea if they still carry the brand or not but I've always wondered about it. So I was excited when I got to review this, obviously! I was sent Slate and Merlot:

Slate is a strange color indeed, but I liked it. It's sort of a putty type of color, a mix of grey and sand with a green tinge to it.
Merlot is your basic dark red/brown shade. While it looks like a deep vampy red in the bottle, on the nail it turns into more of a very deep brown shade with red undertones.
Now I realize some of you may be completely baffled by the idea of a paint and peel polish. Isn't peeling your polish off BAD for your nails? Well, normally yes, but this polish is actually designed to be peeled off after only a few hours of wear. Here's the facts about what Sula Paint & Peel actually is:
  • Sula nail paint lasts as long as mascara on your eyelashes, or foundation on your face. Paint and Peel color is makeup for your nails.
  • With the Sula Permanent Top and Base coat, Paint and Peel will last as long as standard nail polish. Remover may be needed.
  • Sula is big 3 free, and is a water based product. It smells like nothing!
  • Sula nail color is meant ot be applied daily.
  • It dries faster than normal polish, and requires only two coats.
  • The peeling is meant not to ruin your nails, as it sits on top of your nails and will not dry them out.

Sounds kinda' cool right? When I first applied Sula I followed the directions on the bottle which read: Apply 2 coats to clean naked nails. Touch up when needed and peel off when desired- no polish remover needed! Avoid contact with hot water 3 hours after application.

When first applying it I was totally amazed that the "nail color" doesn't smell like nail polish at all. It does have a smell, but it doesn't smell of chemicals... IMO it kind of smells like glue. However, the smell isn't unpleasent and is very mild. The formula was slightly streaky, but I've dealt with worse. Smooth but streaky would be the best way to describe it. The polish dried quickly, and as the directions read I avoided contact with warm water and went to bed about 3 hours after applying. One thing I noticed upon waking up and cheking my nails out, is that the poilsh remains to have a slightly 'tacky' surface even after drying. This means that your polish can get scratches and dents in it quite easily as well as loose its shine. I then began to peel off the polish, and was slightly set back that the polish was peeling layers off of my nails. However, I tried Sula again later that day and peeled it off about 4 hours after application. This time, no damage was done to my nails. So I guess it really is makeup for your nails, and isn't meant to last more than 4-5 hours. The polish actually peels off quite easily, and is oddly stretchy. Here's a picture:

Overall, I think that Sula Paint & Peel is a really unique product. It's certainly not for everyone, and I would imagine that some women would really hate this product as it's not your conventional polish. It's more of a novelty item in my opinion, and I think i'll be using it sort of inbetween manicures when I don't want to take the time to do a real manicure, yet don't want bare nails. I also really really liked the fact that it has no smell, as well as that you can change your polish everyday. However, if you don't want to go with naked nails half way through the day, I think you would have to change your polish more than once a day with this, as it comes off pretty easily. The product is also ideal for someone who doesn't want to deal with all of the chemicals that are in regular polish, because this is water based.

Sula Paint & Peel is a fun and very unique product overall. If you're a nail polish junkie, and love trying out new brands/new products I would say that trying a bottle of this wouldn't hurt. However if the idea of your polish comming off a few hours after application freaks you out, I'd stay away from it.

You can pick up your own bottle of Paint & Peel here for $9.

(ps: PEELING IS SO ADDICTING.)

  1. Haha my nails get ruined within an hour, even with regular polish and top coats and everything. I can't imagine how many minutes they would last in this!

  3. This sounds really cool! I think this would also be great for women who aren't really into makeup, but have to glam up for a special occasion!

  4. It sounds really cool, but I honestly wouldn't want to do this for my nails. When I do my nails, I go with the idea that they would last for at least a few days, not a few hours. xD So I don't think I would be trying it, haha. Slate looks really awesome though. :3 I really like that color.

  5. One of my cousins gave me a peel off polish for Christmas. I haven't tried it yet though because I want it to last for more than a few hours, like sunniipinky said.
